Your Photos of Winter Beauty

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” —John Steinbeck

Last January, snow fell in our woods, filling up the spaces beneath the trees, dusting the shrubs, coating our fence, brightening the landscape. Our front yard, with the crescent-shaped concrete bench under the beech and deer-eaten hydrangeas beside, became a winter scene that wooed me to the kitchen window.

To those who see snow every season, it might be ho-hum, but where I live, it’s magic.

It makes me imagine and wonder and dream…

Snow doesn’t often fall this far south, though, so I have a limited supply of snow photos. Therefore, I sometimes do, I recently asked on Facebook for your photos of winter beauty, and you sent quite a supply, enough for several posts in the future. Thank you!

For now, here are just a mittenful (ahem…).

Photo: Jan Dillehay

Dirck and Jan Dillehay and their family went skiing in Whistler, Canada. Although Dirck has been confined to a wheelchair for several years now, he doesn’t let that stop him, as the next photo shows.

Jan says, “Imagine how a wheelchair bound person would feel in this moment.” Wow.

Photo: Melinda DeRocker

Melinda and Rob DeRocker live in New York. This is a recent photo of the sunset over the Hudson River, taken out their back door.

Photo: Michele Pryse

Michele Pryse lives with her husband in Southern Oregon in this homestead cabin. Over 100 years old, Chocolate Box Cottage has been added onto and updated to include such necessaries as plumbing, electricity, and a proper kitchen. It looks like a fairy tale, doesn’t it?

Photo: Kenny Smith

Kenny Smith sent this picture of his and his wife’s fire pit in Virginia after the first snow of the season. See how the red chairs stand out in the midst of all the white?

Photo: Lorelei Fischer

Lorelei Fischer’s photo of snow falling on her drive makes me want to discover what’s around the bend.

Lisa Butler’s dog explores the snow early one morning. Look how her copper fur echoes the copper leaves of the young beech trees in the wood.
